Gary Wortel became President & Publisher of The Sacramento Bee/ Regional Publisher McClatchy in April 2017. The Bee has a 161-year history of public service and has brought accountability to the institutions that serve Sacramento and its surrounding communities and is the largest media company in the Sacramento region with an audience that exceeds six million readers in print and online every month.
Gary also has regional responsibilities over McClatchy’s West Region which includes Sacramento, CA, Boise Idaho, Fresno, CA, Tacoma Washington and 6 other media companies in Washington State and California.
Gary previously held the position of President and Publisher of The Fort Worth Star-Telegram for nine years and was the President and Publisher of The Sun News in Myrtle Beach, SC for three years. He has held leadership roles as VP Advertising and Marketing at the Saint Paul Pioneer Press and Advertising Director at the Nashville Tennessean. He started his professional career at the San Jose Mercury News, including two years as automotive manager.
He is a graduate of San Jose State University with a degree in public relations. His community involvement includes serving on the various boards in the Fort Worth area; the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Fort Worth Inc., the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and worked closely with the Fort Worth Economic Development Group.
Raised most of his life in California, Gary and his wife, Patti, have four children and two grandchildren. Two daughters, one son and two grandsons live in Nashville, TN and his youngest son attends Texas Tech University. His major interests outside work include travel, golf and skiing.
